How to Fix Steam Overlay Not Working in Windows 10

Steam has a built-in overlay feature with tons of game features. 
Ranging from in-game communication, friend and group chats, community stuff, even a browser is there so you can check something without pausing the game! Normally, pressing Shift+TAB during a Steam game will open the overlay. But sometimes the overlay may not appear, or even if it does appear, it may not work properly. In this article, we are going to show you how to fix Steam overlay issues.

Workarounds :

1. Check by restarting the game client.

a. Close the game you are playing.

b. Click the arrow button on the taskbar to view the minimized icons.

c. Then right-click the Steam icon and click Exit .

Open Steam again and check.

2. Disable real-time protection of antivirus program on your computer. Check again.

Fix 1 : Make sure Overlay is checked

The overlay won't work if it's not enabled by default.

1. Open the Steam application on your computer.

2. Once it opens, click on " Steam " in the menu bar.

3. Then click on " Settings ".

4. Click " In-Game Overlay " in the settings panel on the left .

5. Make sure you have checked the " Enable Steam overlay during gameplay " option .

6. Finally, click " OK ".

Start the game you were playing. Open Steam Overlay and check again.

Fix 2 Run : overlay with admin privileges

This problem occurs when you run the overlay with administrator privileges.

1. First. press Windows key+E .

2. After that, just go to the location where Steam is installed on your computer. It's generally in this place-

C:\Programme (x86)\Steam\

3. Locate the GameOverlayUI.exe file in the Steam folders .

4. Then right-click the application and click " Properties " to access it.

5. Once the GameOverlayUI properties open, go to the Compatibility tab .

6. Activate the option " Run this program as an administrator ".

7. Finally, click " Apply " and " OK " to save this setting.

8. Right-click Steam.exe, select Compatibility, and then check Run this program as an administrator .

Then close File Explorer. Quit the Steam client if you already have it open. Open Steam and launch a game. Check the status of the problem.

Fix 3 : Kill GameOverlayUI process

You need to end the GameOverlayUI process from the task manager.

1. Launch the game from Steam.

2. Once the game launches, press "Shift+Tab" to access the Steam overlay.

Minimize the game.

3. First you need to right click on the Windows icon in the lower left corner.

4. Then click on " Task Manager ".

5. Once the Task Manager screen appears, go to the Details tab .

6. On the Details tab, look for the GameOverlayUI.exe process .

7. Then right click this process and click " End Task " to end it.

When you are finished, close the task manager.

Restart the game and open the Steam overlay. Check again.

Fix 4 : Quit conflicting apps running in the background

Sometimes, some screen recorders or FPS trackers running in the background while gaming can cause this problem in the first place.

1. First, press Ctrl+Shift+Esc keys together.

2. Once Task Manager opens, right click on any screen recorder or the FPS tracker and click " End Task " to end it.

Example -As you can see, "Fraps" is running in the background on our system, so right click on the " Fraps " process and click " End Task " to end it)

Once you have done this, try using the Steam overlay again. This should have solved your problem.

Fix 5 : Enable Steam overlay for the game

If nothing works, try enabling the Steam overlay feature for the specific game.

1. First, launch the Steam client on your computer.

2. When the Steam client opens, go to the Library section .

3. Now right click on the particular game you are facing on the left panel and click on " Properties ".

4. Here, switch to the " General " tab.

5. On the General tab, make sure " Enable Steam overlay during gameplay " is checked.

Minimize Steam once you've enabled the Steam overlay. Launch the game and access the Steam overlay. Look at it.

Fix 6 : Purge config steam

Flushing the configuration of Steam.

1. Press the Windows key together with the " R " key.

2. After that, paste this code into the Run window. Then click " OK ".

steam://flushconfig

Restart the Steam client. Try accessing the Steam overlay again.

Fix 7 – Uninstall and reinstall Steam

Try uninstalling and reinstalling the Steam app from your computer.

1. Pressing the Windows Keys+R keys at the same time will open Run ".

2. Then you need to type " appwiz.cpl ". Click OK .

3. Then right-click on the " Steam " application and then click on " Uninstall ".

4. Then click " Uninstall ".

Steam is simply uninstalled.

5. Once Steam has been uninstalled from your system, click " Close " to close the setup window.

Install Steam

1. Just go to the Steam website.

2. Then click " Install Steam " to download the installation package.

The Steam setup file will download.

3. After the Steam setup has been downloaded, double- click " SteamSetup.exe " on your computer.

Follow the on-screen instructions to install the Steam application.

4. When the installation process is complete, click " Finish ".

Now launch the Steam client and try to open the Steam overlay.

Your problem should be solved.
