A guide to new accessibility features in Windows 11

Microsoft has always made sure that its platform can meet the needs of every person around the world. Just like Windows 10, Windows 11 is full of new accessibility features that are built into the core of the operating system and help people with special abilities use the operating system more efficiently than ever before. There's the introduction of many features, such as mono audio, screen flash during audible notifications, and some old features have been revamped and further integrated. We've discussed the new accessibility features and how you can take full advantage of these new features on your new Windows 11.

You can access these features from Accessibility in the Settings menu.

1. Just press Windows Key+I keys to open the settings panel.

2. Next, click on the " Accessibility " settings in the left pane. Ease of Access settings renamed to Accessibility ]

Different types of accessibility features in Windows 11

There are three new accessibility features to help people with hearing disabilities hear properly.

  • Mono-Audio
  • Flash screen during audio notifications
  • subtitle

Mono-Audio 

The Mono Audio feature simply combines two channels (left and right) into one. This feature is very useful for people who hear less in one of their ears. Follow these steps to enable this feature-

1. Open the settings window.

2. Then click " Accessibility " on the left side .

3. Next, in the right pane, scroll down and click " Audio " under the "Hearing" section.

4. After that, toggle the " Mono Audio " settings to " On ".

This will enable mono audio capability on your computer.

Flash screen during a notification

If you enable this feature, the screen will flash when your computer receives a new notification, replacing the audible notifications.

1. Open Settings.

2. Then go this way-

Accessibility > Audio

3. Then click " Flash my screen for audio notifications " in the right pane.

4. Now just select " Flash my entire screen " from the drop-down list.

Just close the settings and you're done.

Edit subtitle styles

You can customize the subtitle styles as you like. This feature has been redesigned for better usability.

1. Just open the settings page as before.

2. Next, click " Accessibility " on the left side .

3. Next, in the right pane, scroll down and click on " Subtitles " in the "Hearing" section.

4. You can change the "Caption Style" if you don't like the existing one.

5. If you want to edit the existing subtitle style, also tap on the " Edit " button.

6. Now you can customize the subtitle style as you like.

These are the new accessibility features in Windows 11.

There are other various accessibility features for blind users that are present in the operating system and are already part of Windows 10.

1. First, open the settings screen.

2. Then click on " Accessibility " settings on the left side.

3. On the right side you will find the list of these accessibility settings.

text size- 

You can enlarge the text to compensate for the problem of hypermetropia (the eye condition that partially obscures the view of nearby objects).

1. Tap on " Text Size " on the right side of the "Accessibility" features.

2. Now just drag the size slider to the right side to increase the size. You'll notice that the reference text gets bigger and bigger.

3. When you are satisfied with the size, tap " Apply " to apply the settings.

Visual effects 

You can also customize the visual effects like animation, transparency effects, and scrollbar visibility feature to your liking in the Visual Effects settings .

1. Click " Visual Effects " in the right pane.

2. Just toggle the specific function " On " or " Off ".

Close the settings.

mouse pointer and touch 

You can toggle the visibility of mouse pointer settings and touch options.

1. Just click on the " Mouse Pointer and Touch " settings.

2. Now you can choose any of the predefined cursor styles for better visibility.
3. You can even correct the correct cursor size by adjusting the cursor slider on the same screen.

4. Windows 11 has become a more touch-friendly operating system. So if you want to see where you're touching the screen, you can display a touch indicator at the slightest touch.

5. Switch the " Touch Display " settings to " ON ".

6. Also, you can tick " Make the circle darker and larger " to make the touch display more visible.

Textcursor-

You can customize the appearance of the text cursor (e.g. thickness, color, size). You can easily correct it according to your needs.

Lupe

Magnifier settings allow you to magnify the entire screen for better visibility. You can toggle the zoom level and zoom level settings on your screen.

color filter

If your eyes are sensitive to certain colors, you can try built-in color filters to correct colors to your needs.

You can also press Windows icon + Ctrl + C keys to toggle color filters on or off.

Contrast themes

Windows 11 has a new theme style called "Contrast Themes". This theme uses two or more contrasting colors to make text and apps stand out more than usual on your screen. There are four different themes named-

water
desert
twilight
night sky

1. In the "Accessibility" settings in the right pane, click " Contrast Themes ".

2. Here you can see a preview of all four contrast themes.

3. Just click the drop down icon and select the contrast themes.

4. Then click on " Apply ".

You will see the contrast theme on your computer. Also, if you precombine Alt + Left Shift + Print Screen keys to toggle contrast themes on or off.

speaker

The voice output feature is specially designed for blind users. The read-aloud function reads everything where the user places the mouse pointer.
