Fix disc burner was not found Make sure a burner is installed properly

When trying to burn an image to a hard drive on Windows using isoburn.exe (built-in image burning software), you may often see a " A disc burner was not found " error. This usually happens when you download ISO files and then use your PC's optical drive to burn them to an external storage device such as a flash driver or CD/DVD. This can be annoying as you might try to save some important data and the error pops up. The entire error message looks like this "A disc burner was not found". Make sure a burner is properly installed and you have the appropriate permissions to burn a disc. "

The error " A disc burner was not found " can be due to various reasons such as: B. if the DVD-ROM is not equipped with writing functions, if the problem occurs immediately after waking up your system, problems with the explorer.exe, due to a corrupted DVD burner or if you have a mounted ISO file on a external drive want to copy.

The good news is that this error can be fixed. We have compiled a list of methods that can help you fix " A disc burner was not found " error when burning an image on your Windows 10 PC. Let's see how.

*Note- Before proceeding with the methods below, make sure the disc is not damaged or scratched, or check if you have a writable CD/DVD drive or the standard CD-ROM drive. This is because the usual CD-ROM drive doesn't burn CD/DVDs and therefore if your PC has the standard CD-ROM drive, the following methods won't work. Therefore, it is recommended to first check whether the existing optical drive in your PC is writable. How to check:

Step 1: Press Win + E key combination to launch File Explorer .

Step 2: In the File Explorer window, click the This PC shortcut on the left .

Now go to the right side of the window and check the name of your DVD drive. If it shows DVD-RW drive , it means it can read as well as write .

This means that your DVD drive can burn discs with the built-in burning software isoburn.exe .

Once you have confirmed that your PC uses a DVD burner, you can try the following methods.

Method 1: Run hardware and device troubleshooter

Sometimes the problem can appear due to an issue with Windows 10. For example, if your system is backed up from hibernation, Windows 10 can simply forget that your system's optical drive is writable. Restarting your PC can sometimes help fix the problem, but most of the time it doesn't. In such cases, you can try to run the Hardware and Devices Troubleshooter. It can detect all the problems and recommend solutions that you can apply to fix the error. To run the hardware and devices troubleshooter:

Step 1: Right-click Start and select Run to launch Run Command box .

Step 2: In the search box , type cmd and press Ctrl + Shift + Enter keys at the same time to bring up the elevated Command Prompt window.

Step 3: In the Command Prompt ( admin ) window, run the following command and press Enter :

msdt.exe-id DeviceDiagnostic

This will open the Hardware and Devices window .

Step 4: Close the Command Prompt window and click Advanced in the Hardware and Devices window .

Step 5: Now check the box next to Apply repairs automatically and click Next .

Step 6: Troubleshooting will now start detecting problems.

If problems are found, some fixes are recommended.

You can apply the fixes and check if the “ A disc burner was not found ” error has been resolved.

Method 2: Restart File Explorer

In this method, you need to completely close the Windows Explorer process and then restart it from Command Prompt with administrative privileges. You can then open the Burn Disk Image (built-in DVD burner) via the context menu. Let's see how this method is executed:

Step 1: Right-click the Windows icon and choose Task Manager .

Step 2: In the Task Manager window , under the Processes tab , go to the Windows Processes section and look for Windows Explorer .

Right-click on it and choose End Task .

This will shut down Windows Explorer completely.

Step 3: Now press Win+R keys simultaneously on your keyboard to run command.

Step 4: In the Run Command window , type cmd in the search box and press Ctrl + Shift + Enter shortcut keys to open Command Prompt in Administrator mode.

Step 5 : In the elevated Command Prompt window, type the following command and press Enter :

explorer.exe

This will open Windows Explorer with administrator privileges.

Step 6: After the File Explorer window opens, go to the location where the .ISO file is saved and which you tried to burn to disc.

Right-click the .ISO file and choose Burn Disk Image from the new context menu.

You can now configure the tool, open it and see if you can now burn the image to disk.

Method 3: Reinstall the DVR Writer driver

There is a chance that this problem occurs while burning the image to the disc because there is a problem with the DVD burner driver. In such cases, uninstalling and reinstalling the DVD burner driver can help to fix the problem by following the steps below:

Step 1: Go to Start , right click on it and choose Device Manager .

Step 2: In the Device Manager window, go to DVD/CD-ROM Drives and click to expand the section.

Right-click the DVD burner driver causing the problem and select Uninstall device .

Step 4: On the Uninstall device prompt, click Uninstall to confirm the action.

Now restart your PC and Windows will automatically install the latest version of the driver.

*Note- If the driver is not automatically installed when your system boots, you can go to Device Manager > DVD/CD-ROM . Go to Drives > Right Click >   Scan for Hardware Changes .

You can now try burning the image to disk and it should work fine.

Method 4: Disable User Account Control (UAC)

In some cases, disabling UAC or User Account Control can help resolve the issue. Let's see how:

Step 1: Press Win + X keys on your keyboard at the same time and select Run .

Step 2: This will open the Run Command window .

Type useraccountcontrolsettings in the search box and press OK to open User Account Control settings .

Step 3: In the User Account Control Settings window on the left side, move the slider down and set it to Never notify .

Now go back and try burning the image to the disc and you should no longer see the error.

Method 5: Update the outdated DVD driver

In many cases, the problem can occur due to outdated drivers. Therefore, it can interfere with the DVD burner's normal working even if it has the writing capabilities. Therefore, updating the DVD driver to the latest version can help fix the problem.

Step 1: Right-click Start and select Run to to start run command .

Step 2: In the search box, type run command devmgmt.msc and press OK to bring up Device Manager.

Step 3: In the Device Manager window, expand DVD/CD-ROM drives, right-click the driver you are having a problem with and select Update driver .

Step 4: In the Update Driver window , select Search automatically for updated driver software .

Windows will search for available drivers and automatically update them to the latest version.

*Note- Alternatively, you can download the latest version of the driver from the manufacturer's website and use the "Browse my computer for drivers" software option to browse the saved file from your system to install the latest version.

Reboot your PC and try to burn the image to the hard drive.

Method 6: Use a third-party software and not Isoburn.exe

If you try to burn the image to a flash drive, you will not be able to because the Windows burning utility is only compatible with hard drives and not flash drives. In such cases, you can copy the image to a flash drive using third-party software, such as Rufus, a free utility. Here's how to use it to burn ISO images to a flash drive:

Step 1: Visit Rufus official website on your browser

Step 2: Click here to run the downloaded .exe file .

You will be taken directly to the Rufus window .

Step 3: On the Rufus screen, go to the Device field and select the bootable device that you want to burn the ISO image from the drop-down list.

Now go to Boot Choices , select Disk or ISO Image (Please select) from the drop-down list, and then press the SELECT button next to it.

Now click on the Start button below and wait for the process of burning the ISO image to the flash drive to finish.

You have now successfully burned the ISO image file to the flash drive.
