[FIX] Application Error The application failed to start properly (0xc000142)

 In today's article, you will learn how to fix the common Microsoft Office application application error. If you try to open any of the MS Office applications, a dialog box will appear with the message

The application failed to start properly (0xc000142).Click OK to close the application.

If you see this error, try the fixes listed below

Fix 1: MS Office Repair

Step 1: Hold  Windows+r  keys together.

Step 2: In the Run window  , type appwiz.cpl  and press  Enter 

Step 3: In the Programs and Features window that opens, search for  Microsoft Office Suite  or  Microsoft 365. Right-click  and select  Change

Step 4: When the UAC asks for permissions, click  Yes

Step 5: In the window that appears, enable  Quick Repair.

Step 6: Click on the  Repair  button

Step 7: Follow the on-screen instructions and repair Office programs.

Step 8: Restart the application and check if the problem has been solved.

Step 10: If you still get the error, choose  Online Repair  and click  Repair. Make sure you have a working internet connection.

Step 11: In the Ready to Start an Online Repair dialog box  ,  click  Repair

Step 12: Restart the application

Fix 2: Disable your network and reboot

Step 1: Hold  Window + R and open the Run dialog

Step 2: Type ncpa.cpl   and press  Enter

Step 3: Right-click on the network adapter you are connected to and select Disable .

Step 3: Finally, reboot your system.

Step 4: Now try to open the application

Fix 3: Update MS Office application

Step 1: Open any MS Office application. For the demonstration we use Outlook. However, each application should be similar.

Step 2: Click  File  from the top menu options

Step 3: In the window that appears, select the  Office account  on the left

Step 4: Click on  Update Options

Step 5: Select Update  Now from the drop-down menu

Once the application is up to date, check if the error is resolved.

Fix 4: Uninstall and reinstall MS Office

Step 1: Open Run dialog

Step 2: In the Run dialog box  , type appwiz.cpl  and press  Enter 

Step 3: In the Program and Features window that opens, search for  Microsoft Office .

Step 4: Right click on it and choose Uninstall

Step 4: Now reinstall Microsoft Office from your Microsoft account page.
