[FIX] MS Outlook keeps asking for password

One of the most common and annoying issues that most Outlook users have faced is that Outlook asks for a password every time you open Outlook. This happens for the following reasons:

  • If the entered and saved password is wrong
  • If you updated your password on the web and it hasn't updated on your PC
  • Unstable network connections can also cause this problem.

In this article, we have compiled a list of fixes that can help you overcome the Outlook password prompt issue

Fix 1: Remove Credential Manager Credentials

Step 1: Close MS Outlook application if it is open

Step 2: In the search bar next to the start icon, type Credential Manager

Step 3: Click on Credentials Manager 

Step 4: Choose Windows Credentials

Step 5: Scroll down to the General Credentials  section .

Step 6: Find the Outlook account username in this section.

Step 7: Click the down arrow next to the name .

Step 8: You can either edit the password or remove and re-add the password.

Step 9: Click Edit to edit

Step 10: Enter a new password and click Save .

Step 11: Click Remove button to remove .

Step 12: On the confirmation dialog box that appears, click OK

Step 13: Close and reopen the Outlook application

Step 14: You will be prompted for the password. This is because we deleted the saved password from Credential Manager.

Step 15: Enter your password. From now on, when you close and reopen Outlook, it should not prompt for the password.

Fix 2: Make sure the Always ask for credentials option is not selected

Step 1: Open  MS Outlook application.

Step 2: Click on the File menu option

Step 3: Click on Account Settings 

Step 4: Choose Account Settings from the drop-down menu

Step 5: In the Account Settings window that opens, select your account and then click  Change

Step 6: On the Exchange Account Settings window, click More Settings

Step 7: In the window that appears, go to the  "Security" tab

Step 8: In the User Identification section , uncheck Always ask for credentials 

Step 9: Click OK

Step 10: If you are using a POP or IMAP account, make sure the Remember Password option is checked.

Fix 3: Create a new Outlook profile

Step 1: Open the Run dialog using Windows and R keys.

Step 2: Type control and press the Enter key.

Step 3: Search for Mail in the search bar at the top right corner of the Control Panel window. Click on the email option that appears.

Step 4: In the email setup window that opens, click View Profiles  as shown below.

Step 5: Click on Add option .

Step 6: Type the name you want and press  Enter.

Step 7: Make sure the newly created profile is selected.

Step 8: Add your account to MS Outlook.

Fix 4: Running Outlook in Safe Mode

Sometimes ceratin add-ins can cause this problem. To fix the problem, run Outlook in safe mode.

Step 1: Open the Run dialog with  Windows+r keys .

Step 2: Type outlook.exe/safe and press OK.

Step 3: Now Outlook will open in Safe Mode where all add-ins have been disabled. If you don't see the error, it means that an add-on is responsible for the problem.

Step 4: Click on the File menu option as shown below

Step 5: In the window that appears, choose  Options

Step 6: In the Outlook Options window, select  Add-ins  from the left side menu

Step 7: Select  COM Add-ins  from the drop-down menu at the bottom of the window and click  Go button

Step 8:  Disable  all plugins as shown below and click  OK

Step 9: Now enable one add-in at a time and check which add-in is causing the problem.

Step 10: Once the add-in is identified, uninstall and reinstall the add-on and check if the problem is resolved.

Fix 5: Repair MS Office Application

Step 1: Hold Windows+r keys

Step 2: In the Run dialog box  , type appwiz.cpl  and press  Enter 

Step 3: In the Programs and Features window, search for  Microsoft Office Suite  or  Microsoft 365

Step 4: When the UAC asks for permissions, click  Yes

Step 5: In the window that appears, click  Quick Repair

Step 6: Click Repair

Step 7: Check if the issue has been resolved. If not, try online repair.

If the problem occurs due to a corrupted Outlook application, this should help.

Fix 6: Update Outlook application

Step 1: Open MS Outlook application.

Step 2: Click  File  from the top menu options .

Step 3: In the window that appears, select  Office Account on the left side .

Step 4: Click on Update Options

Step 5: Select Update Now from the drop-down menu

Step 6: Wait for the updates to finish installing the system.
