Fix Command Prompt window opens and closes automatically in Windows 11

Does a command prompt window close once it appears on your new Windows 11 computer? Some users have reported this issue on multiple forums of a command prompt terminal flashing briefly on screen before immediately crashing when they start their systems. If you encounter such problem on your computer, follow these solutions to quickly identify and fix the problem.

Fix 1-Change the registry

When malware uses your computer to mine cryptocurrencies, it will open a terminal window and start the process as soon as your computer boots up.

1. First, press the Windows key+R keys at the same time.

2. Then type “ regedit ” in the Run terminal and press Enter .

Warning  - Before you modify the registry on your computer, you should create a backup of the registry on your system. So pay close attention to these instructions.

When Registry Editor opens, click File . Then click " Export " to create a new backup on your computer.

3. When Registry Editor opens, click " Edit ".

4. Then tap " Search ".

5. Now type " SOUNDMIXER " in the box.

6. Then click " Find Next " to find the key

Now Windows locates and locates the key in the registry editor. If no key to "SoundMixer" is found, this is not the cause of this problem. You can proceed to the next solution.

6. Once you find the affected key, right-click the " AutoRun " key in the right pane.

7. Now tap on " Delete " to remove it from your computer.

7. You will see a warning message. Just click Yes to confirm the removal.

After that, close the registry editor. Then restart your computer .

Fix 2 - Add a new environment variable

You need to add an additional environment variable as it may be lost after upgrading your system to Windows 11.

1. First, press the Windows key+R keys at the same time.

2. Then type " sysdm.cpl " and press Enter .

3. Now go to the " Advanced " tab.

4. Then tap on " Environment Variables ".

5. Next, select the " path " parameter in the system variables.

6. Then tap " Edit ".

7. When the Edit Environment Variable window appears, tap on " New ".

8. Then paste that address into the blank space to complete the process.

C:\Windows\SysWow64\

9. Don't forget to tap " OK " to save this change.

After that, close the Task Scheduler window and restart your computer.

After the system boots up, check if the same terminal is still showing or not.

Fix 3 - Disable Office Task

Whenever your computer starts, the Office license is checked by the OfficeBackgroundTaskHandlerRegistration  task, which runs automatically.

1. First, press the  Windows key + R keys  together.

2. Then write this command and click " OK ".

taskschd.msc

3. When Task Scheduler opens, do the following ~

Task Scheduler (Local) > Task Scheduler Library > Microsoft > Office

4. In the right pane you will now find the " OfficeBackgroundTaskHandlerRegistration ".

5. Then right-click the task and tap " Disable ".

After disabling the task, close the Task Scheduler and restart your computer.

Fix 4 - Perform a deep scan

A malware or PUP can start automatically at boot time to work in the background. Use Windows Security to run a full scan to identify and remove malware.

1. First, press the Windows key and type " Windows Security ".

2. Then tap " Windows Security " to open it.

3. In Windows Security, tap Virus & Threat Protection .

4. To view all scan options, tap " Scan Options ".

5. Then select " Full Scan " from all available scan options.

6. Finally, tap " Scan Now " to start the full scan.

Keep in mind that this process can take a long time depending on the number of apps/files on your system.

Windows scans all files and removes all scripts and malware from your system. After running the scan, reboot the system once and check again.

Fix 5 - Run a DISM scan

You need to run a DISM scan to check and repair the system files if you have upgraded your computer from Windows 10 to Windows 11.

1. First, press Windows key+S keys together and type " cmd ".

2. Then right-click " Command Prompt " and click "Run as administrator " to access the terminal.

3. Once Command Prompt opens, paste these commands into Terminal one by one .

Then press  Enter to clean existing image files.

DISM.exe/Online/Cleanup-Image/Scanhealth
DISM.exe/Online/Cleanup-Image/Restorehealth

DISM.exe/online/cleanup-image/startcomponentcleanup

Then close the command prompt terminal and restart your computer.

If the system starts, check again.

Fix 6 - Use process monitor

Download Process Monitor and use it to check which process is causing this problem.

1. You need to download Process Monitor.

2. Then close your browser.

3. Once the ZIP file has downloaded, unzip the " Process Monitor " file.

4. Double click " Procmon " to run it.

This will open the process monitor on your computer. Wait a while for the Process Monitor to load all current processes.

5. Now tap on " Filter " in the menu bar .

6. Then click " Filter " to filter out the specified process.

7. In the Process Monitor Filter window, set the first drop-down list to Operation .

8. Then set the next drop down menu to " is ". Next in the list , set Create Process .

9. Then click Add to add the filter.

10. Finally, tap " OK " to complete the process.

11. Now all you have to do is wait for the Process Monitor to scan and display the processes that match the criteria you set in the filter.

You can minimize this and work in parallel. After a while, return to Process Monitor again and see if you can find the culprit with the path of the executable.

If you are unsure about the origin/contents of this file, simply drop it into VirusTotal and check if it is malware or a virus.
