Fix CompatTelRunner.exe high disk usage issue in Windows 10

CompatTelRunner.exe is an application on Windows that some users report has a problem with its very high disk usage. CompatTelRunner.exe or Windows Compatibility Telemetry is an application developed by Microsoft that reports usage and performance data to Microsoft to improve user experience. It runs in the background and takes some time (especially for low-end computers), a large amount of disks and becomes a reason for very slow booting.

If you want to stop CompatTelRunner.exe with high disk usage, follow these fixes-

Fix-1 Disabling CompatTelRunner.exe using Task Scheduler

You can disable CompatTelRunner.exe using Task Scheduler. Follow these steps to disable it-

1. First you need to press " Windows key " and " R " key and type " taskschd.msc " and press enter .

2. Now click on " Task Scheduler Library " and then on " Microsoft " and then on " Windows ". From the  Windows drop-down menu, click  " Application Experience ".

3. Now you will see some tasks in the right pane of " Application Interface ". Right-click " Microsoft Compatibility Appraiser " and click " Disable ". 

4. Close Task Scheduler and restart your computer. Check if CompatTelRunner.exe still shows high disk usage. If it still has high disk usage, move on to the next fix.

Fix-2 Delete CompatTelRunner.exe as Administrator

You can delete the CompatTelRunner.exe as an administrator. Before proceeding to the next step, make sure you are logged in as an administrator . Follow these steps to delete CompatTelRunner.exe-

1. Press Windows key+R and the Run window takes precedence.

2. Then type " C:\Windows\System32 " and press Enter .

3. Now click on the search tab at the top right corner, type " CompatTelRunner ".

4. Right-click on it and click " Properties ".

5. Click the Security tab and then click the Advanced tab .

6. Next to Owner :, click Change . Now click on " Advanced ".

7. Click the Find Now tab and search for your username . Select the name and click " Ok ".

8. Now click on " OK ".

9. Click " Apply " and " Ok ".

10. Now you need to right click on " CompatTelRunner " and then click on " Properties ".

11. Go to the " Security " tab. Select the username to which you changed ownership.

12. Now select your user name again . Check the box next to " Full Control ".

13. Then click on " Apply " and " Ok ".

Close the CompatTelRunner Permissions window .

14. Now look for the " CompatTelRunner " and right click on it. Click on " Delete ".

Start your computer. The problem will be solved. If it's not solved, go to the next fix.

Fix 3: Uninstall KB2952664

Windows Update  KB2952664  can cause this error. From these steps you can  uninstall KB2952664  from your computer.

1. All you have to do is press Windows key+R at the same time.

2. Then type " cmd " in the Run window and then press this " Ctrl+Shift+Enter ". keys together.

2. Type " dism/online/get-packages | findstr KB2952664 " and press Enter .

3.Type " dism/online/remove-package/PackageName:Package_for_KB2952664~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.1.1.3 " and press Enter .

4. Type " Get- HotFix -id KB2952664 " and press Enter . This step checks whether there is a hotfix error or not. If there is no HotFix error ,  KB2952664 will be deleted  from your computer.

5. Restart your computer and your problem should be resolved.
