When you log into your Windows 10 PC, you won't find any of the previously saved files on your desktop and instead you'll see an error message: " C:\Windows\system32\config\systemprofile\Desktop is unavailable ". This means your desktop folder is either missing or inaccessible. Of course, you panic and wonder if all your desktop files have been deleted.
However, there is no need to worry as this is a common error and can be easily fixed. Before trying to troubleshoot, you need to verify that the hard drive is properly connected in the location on This PC, or verify that the Internet is connected if the location is on a network. However, if the location is not recognized, chances are that it has been deleted.
Let's see how to fix this problem.
Solution: Use the same system profile location
Step 1: Press Windows key + E simultaneously on your keyboard to open File Explorer . Now go step by step to the following location:
- C drive
- window
- system32
- configuration
- system profile
*Note: If you see a message that you are not allowed to access the location, just
click the Next button to continue.
Step 2: Once you reach the location, right-click anywhere on the empty space on the right, click New and choose Folder from the context menu.
Step 3: Name the new folder as Desktop and you're done. Restart your computer to restore your desktop location and previously saved files.
However, if the desktop files are corrupted, you can perform a disk check.
Method 2: Run a disk check for corrupted files
Step 1: Press Windows key + E to open File Explorer , click This PC shortcut on the left side of the window, right-click C drive and choose Properties from the menu . Here we have selected OS (C:) and then Properties .
Step 2: In the Properties window, click the Tools tab and then click the Scan button .
Step 3: A command prompt will appear with the name Error Checking (Operating System (C:)) . Click on the Scan drive option .
Now let the scan complete. Once it's done, you'll see a " Your drive was successfully scanned " prompt and you're done.
