Fix Diagnostic policy service not running error in Windows 10

Some Windows 10 users are reporting on the forums an issue regarding the network adapter troubleshooting process on their computers. Troubleshooter on their computer sees an error called " Diagnostic Policy Service is not running ". Now if you are facing the same problem on your side and trying to find a solution to your problem, you are in the right place. This error usually occurs due to an interruption in the Diagnostics Policy Service(DPS) on your computer. Follow these fixes to fix the problem on your computer. But before you go for the bigger solutions, you should try these workarounds first to try some workarounds to fix the problem with some easier solutions-

Workarounds -

1. Restart your computer. Since many services are automatically restarted on restart, the Diagnostics Policy Service is also restarted.

2. Check if Windows Update is pending. If your computer has an update pending (or downloading), install it and restart your computer. Check if the error is still there or not.

If any of these workarounds didn't work for you, go to these solutions-

Fix-1 Give Network Services Administrator Privileges-

Adding admin rights to network services solved this problem for many users. To do this, follow these steps-

1. Press Windows Key+R to start Run . Now type " cmd " and press Ctrl+Shift+Enter to open Command Prompt with administrative privileges. Click Yes to allow User Account Control.

2. Now type or copy/paste these commands one by one in the Command Prompt window and press Enter after each of them to run them one by one.

net localgroup Administrators/network service add
net add localgroup-administrators/localservice

End

Wait a while as these commands may take a while to run on your computer.

Start your computer. After restarting, check if the DPS service is still not running or not.

Fix-2 Restart Diagnostic Policy Service-

Manually restarting the diagnostic policy service may help you. Follow these steps-

1. Press Windows Key+R to start Run , then type " services.msc " and press Enter . The Services window opens.

2. In the Services window, scroll down through the list of services to find and select " Diagnostic Policy Service" . Now click Restart " on the left pane of Service tab to restart the service on your computer.

After restarting the service, double click on the " Diagnostic Policy Service " to open the properties of it.

3. In the Diagnostic Policy Service Properties window, set the " Startup Type:"  to " Automatic " from the drop-down menu. Now click " Apply " and " OK " to save the changes on your computer.

Close the Services window Restart your computer to save the changes on your computer.

Fix-3 Run SFC scan and DISM tool-

1. Press Windows Key+R to start Run . Type " cmd " and then press Ctrl+Shift+Enter . Now click " Yes " to grant access to User Account Control (UAC) . The Command Prompt window opens with administrator privileges.

2. Now copy and paste this command into the Command Prompt window and then press Enter to run it.

sfc/scannow

NOTICE-

If the above command causes an error on your computer, copy and paste this command into the Command Prompt window and press Enter to run it.

sfc/scannow/offbootdir=c:\/offwindir=c:\windows

[NOTE- Replace " C: " with the drive letter of the Windows installation directory on your computer. ]

Wait a while as the SFC scan may take a while.

After the process is complete , restart your computer .

3. Now press Windows Key+R again to start Run , then type " cmd " and then press Ctrl+Shift+Enter . Now click " Yes " to allow User Account Control (UAC)  access to open the Command Prompt window with administrative privileges. p>

4. Now in the Command Prompt window, copy and paste these commands into the Command Prompt window one by one, and then press Enter after each of these commands to run them.

Dism / Online / Cleanup-Image / CheckHealth
Dism/Online/Cleanup-Image/ScanHealth

Dism/Online/Cleanup-Image/RestoreHealth

Wait a while as the DISM process may also take a while.

Now restart your computer to save the changes on your computer. After restarting your computer, check if the problem persists or not.

Fix-4 Add your username to Trusted Installer-

This problem can be caused by the absence of your account among the trusted devices. Follow these steps to add your account to the trusted devices list-

1. Press Windows Key+R to start Run . Now type “ regedit ” and press Enter .

2. Before proceeding to the main solution, in the Registry Editor window, click File " and then click " Export " and save a backup of the registry to your computer. You can import this backup to your computer in case something goes wrong.

3.Now navigate to this location in the left pane of Registry Editor -

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\DPS\Parameters

Now right click on " Parameters " and then on " Permissions " to open the permissions for that key.

4. In the Parameter Permissions window , click Add to start the process of adding your account.

5. Now copy " NT SERVICE\mpssvc " into the field under " Enter the object names to select: ". Now click on "Check names " and finally on " OK ".

6. In the Parameter Permissions window, click mpssvc to select it. In the mpssvc Permissions  section , click Full Control to grant full access Finally, click " Apply " and " OK " to save the changes to your computer.

Now close the Registry Editor window .

Reboot your computer and after the reboot, check if the diagnostic policy service issue still persists or not.

Fix-5 Uninstall and Reinstall Network Driver-

Follow these steps to uninstall and reinstall the network driver on your computer.

1. Press Windows Key + R to open Run . Now type " devmgmt.msc " and press Enter . The Device Manager utility opens.

2. In the Device Manager utility, look for the Network Adapters option and click on it. It expands to show the available network adapter drivers. Right click on the network driver you are using, click " Uninstall device ".

In the next step we will reinstall the network adapter driver-

Method 1-

Just restart your computer and Windows will install the uninstalled driver itself. Your network driver will work fine again.

Method 2 -

If after restarting your computer you find that the driver is still missing, you need to install the driver yourself. Follow this step to quickly install the driver-

1. Open Device Manager . In the Device Manager window , click Action. Click Scan for hardware changes again .

This will find the uninstalled driver and reinstall the driver.

Method 3-

If method 2 failed to install the driver, follow these steps-

1.In Device Manager , click " View ". Then click " Show hidden device ".

2. This will reveal the hidden drivers in Device Manager . Pay attention to your network adapter. Your network adapter will have a yellow triangle with its name (since no driver is installed). Right- click the network driver and click Update Driver Software .

3.You will be asked " How do you want to search for the drivers? ". Select the " Search automatically for updated driver software " option.

Wait while Windows searches for, downloads, and installs a compatible driver for your network adapter driver.

If the message " The best driver for your device is already installed " appears, click "Check for updated drivers in Windows Update " to select it.

The device's latest driver will be installed along with Windows Update . Close the Device Manager  window.

Restart your computer to save the changes. After restarting, run the troubleshooter again and check if the error persists or not.

Fix-6 Run system restore from a restore point-

If any of the above methods didn't work for you, restoring system files from a system restore point may work.

1. Press Windows Key+R , type " sysdm.cpl " and press Enter .

2. Now click on the "System Protection" tab and then click on " System Restore ". Then click " Choose a different restore point ". Then click Next .

3. In the System Restore window, click the  system restore point from which you want to restore. Then click Next .

6. Finally, click " Finish " to finalize this process. This will reboot your system to the system restore point you selected.

After restarting, your files and folders should be restored to the date specified in the restore process. Some newer files can be left out, but most files and folders are present.

After the restart, your " Diagnostic Policy Service is not running " issue should be resolved.
