In this article, we will show you how to change DHCP lease time in Windows 10. When you connect your device to the internet, your internet service provider assigns it an IP address. This is a dynamic IP address, meaning it will remain active for a specific period of time. After this time, the IP address will expire and your device will get a new IP address.
The Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) server on your network takes on the task of assigning a new IP address after a certain period of time. The period of time that an IP address remains active is called the DHCP lease time. By default, the DHCP lease time is 24 hours.
You can easily view the DHCP lease time for your computer by using Windows PowerShell or Command Prompt. To do this, start either Windows PowerShell or the command prompt as an administrator and enter ipconfig/all. After that, press Enter. Wait for the command to run. After running the command, scroll down to view your computer's DHCP lease time.
You will see the following two pieces of information:
- The time the lease was obtained from the DHCP server.
- The time when the lease expires.
How to change the DHCP lease time on Windows 10
To change the DHCP lease time, you need to log into your router settings. Generally, the address on the router's login page is either http://192.168.1.1 or http://192.168.0.1 .
Type one of these addresses in your web browser's address bar and press Enter. If you get an error, enter a different address.
On the login page you need to enter the username and password. After logging into your account, look for your router 's DHCP server settings. In my case, the DHCP server settings were under my router 's LAN settings .
If you cannot find the DHCP server settings, please refer to your user manual. The lease time is available in the DHCP server settings. Enter the value in the field next to Lease Time and click the Save or Submit button to save the settings.
Hope that helps.
