How to Check IP Address in Windows Using Command Prompt

There are several ways to check the IP address on a Windows PC. Command Prompt is the fastest and easiest. All you have to do is type an 8-digit character in the command line and display the current IP address of your Windows PC.

An IP address is the logical address of a system connected to a network or the Internet. It is used to assign an identity to each computer on that connected network and there are two types:

Private: If your system is connected to the internet through a router, it will get an identity from the router. This identity is called a private IP address and cannot be accessed directly from the internet. Any other system connected via the local network can identify this system via the private IP address.

Public: If your system is connected directly to the Internet without a router, it obtains an identity from the user's Internet Service Provider (ISP). This global and unique identity is the system's public IP address and is used to identify the computing device on the internet.

If you want to check your system's IP address using Command Prompt, follow the steps below for two different situations:

How to find the local IP address on a Windows PC

This is the quickest way to find out your Windows PC's IP address. Let's start:

1) Click the Windows logo and type cmd 2) Select Run as administrator from the right pane

3) Select Yes when prompted in a dialog box.
4) At the command prompt, type the following command and press Enter .

ipconfig

This command displays the detailed information of the active network configured on your operating system.

You can find your PC IP address right next to the IPv4 address as shown in a yellow highlighted character above.

However, if you want to find detailed information about all network adapters configured on your system, e.g. e.g.:

  • Hostname
  • physical address
  • DHCP
  • IPv6 address

etc. Then you can use the following command and press Enter:

ipconfig/all

Look for the IPv6 Address and IPv4 Address lines for each network adapter and check the addresses next to each of them. This is how you find the private IP addresses for your internet connections.

Then close the command prompt.

To check the public IP address

1) Open Command Prompt

2) Type the following command and press Enter.

nslookup myip.opendns.com resolver1.opendns.com

This shows your public IP address.

Now you can close the command prompt.

So, this was the simple yet easy way to find out your system's IP address
