Sometimes when typing on a computer keyboard , you can find yourself in a situation where you keep typing or clicking the wrong key. It may be due to a change in the environment you are used to, working in, or simply being out of practice. The bureaucracy of a computer has evolved a lot and wasting time on repeated typing errors can be quite frustrating. In such scenarios, you might want to disable the function of that particular button/buttons altogether so that your work is not affected even if you accidentally click on them. Today we are going to show you how to disable a keyboard key of your choice in Windows 10 .
This may seem like a far-fetched idea to some of you, but it's not. All you have to do is download Windows PowerToys and the answer is just a few clicks away.
Disable a specific keyboard key in Windows 10
Before we start the tutorial, it is important that you become familiar with the tool that you will be using. We use the Keyboard Manager which is part of the Microsoft PowerToys package. PowerToys is a very useful system utility pack developed by Microsoft to assist its users in various aspects of their Windows experience.
The process used here is very simple. Here's what you need to do:
First you need to download, install and launch the PowerKeys application on your computer. If you can't find the icon anywhere, you can also launch it from the taskbar.
When the PowerToys window opens, click Settings. This will take you to the main application interface.
From the list of available options on the left, click Keyboard Manager. Here, make sure that the Keyboard Manager is activated. Under the Remap Keyboard option, click Remap Key.
This will open a new window. To disable a button's function, click the icon. Because this utility is commonly used to remap a key, you now have the ability to select a key and the resulting output to which to remap that key's functionality. To select a key, just type it on your keyboard.
In this case, we disable the Pg Dn (Page Down) button. You have the ability to restrict the operation of any key from here, be it an alphabet, a number, or any of the desktop keyboard keys like ctrl, alt, etc.)
Select the key you want to disable (for us, the image is down) and select Undefined from the Mapped: dropdown menu . If you're having trouble finding the option from the maze of possible keys, just type the letters 'U' and 'N' and it will appear.
Save these settings by pressing 'Ok' and confirm the displayed warning message. You have now successfully deactivated the functionality of a key of your choice. If you want to undo this move, just click on the trash can icon and press Ok again.
You can use the ' Remap a shortcut ' option and follow the same steps as above to disable a Windows keyboard shortcut as well.
Using SharpKeys is another option
If you are looking for a solution that works for all versions of Windows and not just Windows 10, you can use SharpKeys. It offers the same service as PowerToys Keyboard Manager, but I think it has a less interactive interface.
KeyTweak is another tool that you can use to disable or remap keys.
I hope you can now easily disable a keyboard key or key combination of your choice. You can thus disable a stuck key, Home, Insert, Windows, F1 Help or any other key in Windows 10.
