How to fix Audacity error code 9999

Audacity is an open source sound editor widely used by sound artists around the world. Although this software is almost bug-free like any other application, it is not 100% bug-proof. One of the annoying Audacity bugs is the "Error Code -9999". This problem is often followed by this error message - "Unexpected host error".

Workarounds -

1. Disable or uninstall the antivirus program (Kaspersky / Avast) on your computer. Check if this fixes the problem.

Fix 1 – Allow apps to access microphone

You need to adjust the microphone permission in the settings window.

1. First, press the Windows key+I keys at the same time.

2. Then click on the " Privacy " settings to access it.

3. Next, click " Microphone " on the left.

4. In the "Microphone access for this device" settings, click Change . Set it to " ON ".

5. Then scroll down to "Allow desktop apps to access your microphone" settings.

6. Set this setting to " ON " here

This will enable microphone access for the computer.

Fix 2 - Quit background programs

Audacity cannot access the microphone when another application is using it in the background.

1. Press the Windows key+X keys at the same time .

2. Then click on " Task Manager ".

3. When Task Manager opens, check what process is using the microphone in the background (e.g. Skype, Cortana, etc.).

4. Right-click the process that is using the microphone and click " End Task " to end it.

5. Kill all microphone related processes in the same way.

Task for apps like Skype , Microsoft Teams . exit etc. that appear to be using a microphone.

Check if this fixes your problem.

Fix 3 – Set microphone as default device

You need to set the microphone as your default device.

1. Press  Windows Key + R to open Run .

2. Then type mmsys.cpl and click OK .

3. When the sound window opens, click the " Record " tab.

4. Next, right-click on the microphone you are using and click " Set as default device "

This should set the device as the default audio driver on your computer.

That should have fixed your problem.

Fix 4 – Quit Skype

Skype is one of the applications that sometimes clashes with Audacity.

1. Close the Skype application.

However, closing the Skype application does not mean that it will quit completely. It minimizes the taskbar and still uses microphone access.

2. To close the app permanently, click on the arrowhead in the taskbar. Then right-click the Skype icon and click Quit Skype to close the app.

Also, if you have other apps that use the microphone, like Microsoft Teams, stop them too.

Now try using Audacity again and see if this fix works.

Your problem should be solved.
