Often the screen flickering on your Windows 10 PC can occur due to a corrupted application or due to an outdated/invalid display driver. Regardless of whether you use a laptop or a desktop, this is a common problem and it can be frustrating, especially when you are in the middle of an important work. In most cases, you don't have to worry as a few tweaks to the display driver or the problematic application can help fix your screen flickering on your Windows 10 PC.
The problem mostly appears immediately after upgrading to Windows 10, but it can also appear at any time. Before we show you some methods to fix the screen flickering on your Windows 10 PC, run the following screen flickering test to determine the cause of the problem.
How to run the screen flicker test
Step 1: Right-click on the taskbar and choose Task Manager .
Step 2: Once the task manager is open, check if the task manager is flickering along with the screen and all the icons.
If this is the case, the problem could be with the display driver.
However, if Task Manager is stable and everything else on the screen is flickering, the problem is most likely with a recently installed application.
Now that you have a good idea of what the possible cause of screen flickering might be, there are a few quick tricks you can try. Often we are not aware that the problem could be a loose monitor cable. Therefore, check that the monitor cable is properly seated on the back of the device. If not, make sure you unplug the cable and plug it back in properly.
Alternatively, you can also check if the monitor cable is damaged, incompatible or of poor quality. In any of these cases, consider replacing your monitor cable based on the recommendations in the monitor's manual and investing in a good quality and compatible cable. This should fix the screen flickering on your Windows 10 PC, but if it doesn't, continue with the solutions below.
Method 1: Change the refresh rate of the monitor
Sometimes the screen flickering problem can occur if you have set your monitor to a higher refresh rate than you need. The monitor's refresh rate determines how often the content on your PC screen refreshes, but not all monitors are configured to refresh content at a higher rate and hence the error can occur. In such a case, you can change the refresh rate and see if it helps to fix the problem. To change the refresh rate:
Step 1: Click the Start menu and select Settings (gear icon).
Step 2: This will open the Settings window .
Here go to the System option .
Step 3: You will be taken directly to the Display page in the Settings window .
Go to the right side of the pane, scroll down and click the Advanced display settings link under the Multiple displays section .
Step 4: In the next window, go to the Refresh Rate section and from the Refresh Rate drop-down menu, select a lower refresh rate than the current one.
Close the settings window and the screen flickering issue should now be gone.
Method 2: Uninstall problematic apps
This method is useful when you have a vague idea of which app might be causing the problem. For example, if you recently installed an app and the screen flickering issue started appearing immediately afterwards, then that particular app is your target. There's a chance that the app either doesn't meet the system requirements (e.g. you downloaded a 64-bit app for a 32-bit PC) or is simply an outdated version, thus causing the issue.
In such a case, you can either download the correct version based on the system architecture (32-bit/64-bit) or visit the app's website to check if there is a latest version available for it. If available, you must first uninstall the installed app and then install the latest version. Let's see how to uninstall the app:
Step 1: Press Win+I keys simultaneously on your keyboard to open Settings app .
Step 2: On the Settings window , click Apps .
Step 3: You will go directly to the Apps & features section in the Settings window .
Go to the right side of the pane and look for the problematic app in the Apps & features section.
Select the problematic app and click the Uninstall button at the bottom .
Step 4: In the pop-up, press the Uninstall button again to confirm the action.
Once the app is completely uninstalled, restart your PC and check if the screen flickering issue is resolved.
Method 3: Update the display drivers
If your screen is flickering on your Windows 10 PC, the problem could also be the display driver. Maybe the driver is outdated and you missed an update. In such a case, you can try updating the driver to the latest available version and check if that solves the problem:
Step 1: Right click on Start menu and select Device Manager to open Device Manager window .
Step 2: In the Device Manager window, navigate to Display adapters and expand the section by clicking the arrow on the left.
Now right click on the graphics driver and select Update driver .
Step 3: In the Update driver window, click Search automatically for drivers .
Now wait for Windows to search for available drivers and if available, the driver will be automatically updated to the latest version.
Restart your PC and see if your screen is still flickering.
*Note- Alternatively, you can download and install the display driver manually by downloading the latest version from the manufacturer's website and then installing using this procedure- Device Manager > Graphics Cards > Graphics Drivers > Right -Click > Update Drivers > Browse my computer for drivers .
Method 4: Roll back the driver to the previous version
If updating the display driver doesn't fix the problem, you can roll back the driver to the previous version and see if that fixes the problem. Follow the steps below to roll back the driver:
Step 1: Right-click Start and select Device Manager .
Step 2: This will open the Device Manager window .
Here navigate to Display Adapters and click on the arrow next to it to expand the section.
Now right click on the graphics driver and select Properties .
Step 3: In the Properties dialog box, select the Driver tab and click the Roll Back Driver button .
Press OK to return to Device Manager and the driver should roll back to the older version.
Now exit Device Manager, restart your PC and the screen flickering issue should go away.
Method 5: Uninstall and reinstall the display driver
Since the screen flickering issue could very well be related to the display drivers, you can try t . to uninstall and then reinstall driver in safe mode. Once you uninstall the drivers and restart your PC, the drivers will be reinstalled automatically. However, since you need to do this in Safe Mode, let's see how to do it.
Step 1: Right-click Start and select Settings to launch the Settings app . p>
Step 2: In the Settings window , click Update & Security .
Step 3: Next, click on Recovery on the left side of the window .

Now on the Choose an option screen , select Troubleshoot .
Step 6: In the Troubleshoot section , click Advanced options .
Step 7: Then click on Startup Settings from the Advanced Options screen .
Step 8: In the next window, click on the Restart option .
Step 9: Next, press the number 4 on your keyboard to restart your PC in Safe Mode.
Step 10: Now press Win+R key combination to open Run command .
Step 11: In the search box Run command, type devmgmt.msc and press Enter to open . the Device Manager window .
Step 12: In the Device Manager window, expand the Display adapters section .

Step 14: Now restart your PC and Windows should automatically reinstall the display driver.
Now restart your PC to check if the screen flickering issue is resolved.
Method 6: Install a new driver version
However, you can still check if a new version of the driver is available via updates by following the instructions below:
Step 1: Press Win+I key combination to open Settings app .
Step 2: From the Settings app , select Update & Security .
Step 3: You are now on the Windows Update page in the Settings window .
Here, go to the right side of the window and click on Check for updates .
If updates are available, click here to download and install them automatically.
You can restart your PC and the screen flickering issue should be resolved.
Method 7: Disable Windows 10 automatic driver update
Windows 10 periodically releases mandatory updates with patches, security enhancements, feature updates, and more that are critical to keeping your system running optimally at all times. The updates are installed automatically and thus the drivers are also updated automatically. However, if you have already installed the latest version of the driver and the screen flickering issue is resolved, you can disable automatic driver update to prevent Windows 10 from updating the driver automatically.
Method 8: Create a new user profile
If none of the above methods work, creating a new user profile may help fix the screen flickering issue. Follow the steps below to create a new user profile on your Windows 10 PC:
Step 1: Press Win+I keys simultaneously on your keyboard to open Settings window .
Step 2: From the Settings window, click on the Accounts option .
Step 3: Next, click on Family & other users option on the left side of the panel.
Step 4: Now navigate to the right side of the window, go to the Other users section and click on Add someone else to this PC .
Step 5: Another window will open- How will this person sign in?
From here, click the I don't have this person's sign- in information link .
Step 6: In the next window ( Create an account ), select the Add a user without a Microsoft account link .
Step 7: Now in the Create a user for this PC window, enter the username and password .
Click Next to finish creating the new user account.
Once done, log in with the new user account and this time you should no longer face the screen flickering of your Windows 10 PC.
