How to fix Google Chrome not saving passwords in Windows 10

For us, remembering passwords has long been the most convenient function that Google Chrome offers. A common problem reported recently is that Google Chrome does not save passwords as expected. Wherever you'd expect it to autofill passwords, whether it's in mailboxes, bank accounts, university accounts, music apps, or shopping sites, Chrome reportedly prompts users to enter them manually. This will cause a lot of concern, especially if you haven't written down the passwords elsewhere. The whole resetting process can be tedious and in some cases irrecoverable at any cost.

There are several reasons that can lead to this problem. It could either be that Chrome doesn't allow saving passwords due to a setting or there are corrupted cache files. If the current Chrome profile is corrupted for some reason, it may deviate from this feature. Also, there is a known bug, confirmed by Google itself, that might be causing this issue.

Read through this article which contains several fixes to fix your passwords not saving issue.

1. Access Chrome-Browser User Data Location

2. Now open File Explorer

3. Copy and paste the path given below and press Enter.

%UserProfile%\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data

4. Delete the Credentials and Credentials Journal files .

5. Relaunch Chrome.

METHOD 2: Click on the key sign on the top right

1. Open Chrome and go to the website login page.

2. After entering credentials and submitting the form, click the key icon in the top-right corner of Chrome's address bar.

3. Now click Save to save the password.

METHOD 3: Configure Chrome to save the password

Many users are unaware of the password saving configuration provided by Chrome. By default, the option is disabled. If you enable it, you can allow Google Chrome to remember your passwords and auto-fill them when needed.

To activate it, follow the steps given below

Step 1: Open Chrome and access the "Actions" menu by clicking the three dots  on the top right corner of the window.

Step 5: In the settings available under Passwords, you will find an option called Offer to save passwords . By default it is disabled. To enable it, move the slider next to it to the right.

Step 6: Close the window and R launch the Google Chrome application.

Try saving the password again and see if the issue is resolved. If not, move on to the next fix.

METHOD 4: Update to the latest version of Google Chrome

One of the latest versions released by Google actually fixed this problem. Updating your Google Chrome to the latest version can help you with that. While it's possible for Chrome to update itself when there's a stable internet connection, this may not always be the case. Any third party application, manual user intervention or custom power plan on your system to regulate it will stop Chrome application to update itself.

How to update to the latest Chrome version

Step 1: Open Google Chrome in your system and click on the three dots that you can find on the top right.

Step 2: You will now find a Help option . Click on it.

Step 3: Now click on About Google Chrome option . It will take you to another window.

Step 4: On the right you will find the About Chrome heading Below that, it will check for the latest updates on your system. It will automatically start updating Chrome to the latest version.

Once the update is complete, you will see the message Google Chrome is up to date along with the version number for the update.

Step 5: Close the window and restart the browser for the changes to take effect.

That's it, check if the issue is resolved after the latest update. If not, try the next fix.

METHOD 5: Disable clearing cookies and website data when exiting Chrome

Normally, if the local website data and cookies are cleared when you exit Chrome, there is a high chance that your saved passwords will be lost. This configuration should remain disabled. It is reported by many users that this configuration, which prevents saving cookies and local site data when exiting Chrome, is enabled due to a bug.

To disable the setting, follow the steps given below

Step 1: Open Google Chrome and open Actions by clicking the 3 dots in the top right corner.

Step 2: Click on the Settings option from the available list .

Step 3: Find Privacy & Security option on the left . Click on it.

Step 4: Under the Privacy & Security tab in the right pane, you will find an option called Cookies and other site data . Click on it.

Step 5: On the right, scroll down a bit and you'll find a setting called Clear cookies and site data when exiting Chrome . If it's on, turn it off by sliding the Shift key next to it to the left .

If it was already disabled, you don't need to do anything.

Step 6 : If you have made changes to the settings, restart your browser . This will make the changes take effect.

Step 7: Try saving your passwords again and see if it succeeds this time.

If the method given above doesn't work for you, move on to the next available fix.

METHOD 6: Clear cache and cookies

Old caches in your Chrome can mess with your old passwords and cause problems when storing them effectively. Clearing the caches can help fix this problem. To clear caches, follow the steps given below to customize and control Chrome settings.

Step 1: Open Chrome browser and click on the three dots on the top right corner of the window.

Step 2: From the list, click on the arrow next to the More tools option .

Step 3: Now select Clear browsing data option .

Step 4: A new Clear Browsing Data window will appear. Click the Basics tab .

Step 5: Change the drop-down value to Total Time for the Specified Time Period option .

Step 6: Make sure all settings including Browsing history, Cookies and other site data, and Cached images and files remain enabled.

Step 7: Now choose the option of Clear Data .

Step 8: Restart the browser and try to save the passwords again.

If clearing the caches doesn't help, move on to the next fix.

METHOD 7: Use a new Chrome profile.

If for some reason the already saved user profile and settings in Chrome are corrupted, it is recommended to create a completely new profile. However, all previously saved user settings and other important related information may be lost. Make sure you write them down for future reference before proceeding with this fix.

To create a new user profile, follow the steps given below.

Step 1: Open Chrome browser and click on the Account icon (a round icon) at the top right corner of the window.

Step 2: You will find a Settings icon to manage people next to Other people in the list of options. Click on it.

Step 3: You will find an Add Person option at the bottom right to add a new user profile. Click on the option.

Step 4: In the window that opens, you will be asked to enter a name for the new user to be created and an avatar from the avatar gallery available.

Then click the Add button to add the user. It is saved successfully.

Step 5: Now reboot your system to check if all the new information and passwords are saved in the new profile you just created.

One of the above methods should probably work for you. If not, there are several third-party applications available to help you manage your passwords with ease. Some of those that have proven effective are Dashlane, StickyPassword, and LastPass, which you can install as plugins on your Chrome browser.

Try these methods and please let us know which method works best for you. Please do not hesitate to comment on any suggestions.
