How to Fix Sharing Violation Error in Excel

Many users of MS Excel have observed this error message saying "Your changes could not be saved to 'filename' due to a sharing violation" . Once this error appears on the screen, no changes to your worksheets can be saved. This violation has been found in most versions of MS Excel and not just Excel 2007 and 2010.

Saving files with incorrect extensions, indexing permissions not configured on the file folder, or disabled sharing assistant for the folder, or a third-party antivirus program are some possible causes of this error on your PC. This article discusses some troubleshooting strategies to fix sharing violation error on Windows.

Fix 1 : Configure indexing for Excel file folder

1. Close Excel and make sure no instances of MS Office are running in the background.

2. Press Windows Key+E to open File Explorer .

3. Navigate to the folder containing the Excel file with a sharing violation error.

4. Right-click the folder and choose Properties .

5. Click the Advanced button .

6. In the Extended Attributes window, go to Archive and Index Attributes .

7. Check the boxnext to the option   Allow files in this folder to be indexed in addition to file properties .

8. Click OK to confirm the change.

9. Now click Apply to save the changes and then click OK to close the window.

10. Open Excel and check if the sharing violation error is resolved when you try to save the file.

Fix 2 : Allow sharing wizard

1. Open File Explorer by pressing Windows and E at the same time.

2. At the top of File Explorer, select the View tab .

3. Click the Options button on the right .

4. From here , select Change folder and search options to open the folder options window .

5. Go to the View tab .

6. Check the box next to the Use sharing wizard (recommended) option .

7. Click Apply to save the settings and then click OK to exit .

8. Reboot your system. Open your Excel file and check if the problem is resolved.

Fix 3 : Disable third-party antivirus

Sometimes third-party antivirus software interferes with the normal functioning of applications and causes errors. Uninstalling this third party software has helped some users to solve this problem.

1. Press Windows Key+R to open Run .

2. Type appwiz.cpl to open Programs and Features .

3. Locate your antivirus installation.

4. Right- click the antivirus software and click Uninstall .

5. Wait for the uninstall process to complete.

6. Reboot your system and check if the sharing violation issue is resolved.

Fix 4 : Rename the file

Some users have reported that saving the file with a different name helped fix the violation.

1. In MS Excel, go to the File menu .

2. From the list of options , select Save As .

3. In the text box , type a different name for the file.

4. Click Save to complete the save process.

Fix 5 : Save the file to a different location

Users were also able to fix the error by saving the file to a different folder on their PC.

1. In Excel, go to the File menu .

2. Click the Save As option .

3. In the Save As window, click More Options to select a different folder location to save this file.

4. In the Save As window, choose a different folder for this file.

4. Click the Save button to finish saving the file.
