Steam, a digital game distribution platform that has evolved into a gaming community where gamers from all over the world comment, discuss and rate games. Steam chat is integrated into the Steam client to enhance users' gaming experience. Many users reported that the error image could not be uploaded while using the Steam client to send an image via chat. Sometimes Steam even won't allow you to upload a profile picture. The error is "Error uploading: image could not be uploaded" .
The causes of this error can be slow and unstable internet connection, windows firewall, antivirus program, outdated installation of steam client or corrupt client download cache. Before proceeding with the solutions, try the workarounds mentioned below.

2. Check if uploading another image solves the problem, which means there was a problem with the previous image.
3. Try uploading the image at a different time when network traffic is light.
4. Make sure you are not running out of disk space on the Steam server.
Fix 1 : update steam client
1. Open the Steam application on your desktop. Click on Steam in the menu bar .
2. Select Check for Steam Client Updates from the menu options. Apply the update if available.
3. Restart Steam and see if the image can be uploaded.
Fix 2-Log out and log into the Steam client
1. Start the Steam client. Click the profile name at the top right of the window .
2. From the drop-down menu, select Sign out of account .
3. In the next dialog box, click Sign out . Quit Steam and start it again. Log in to your account and check if the image can be uploaded without errors.
Fix 3 : change status to online
1. Start Steam and open the Friends menu .
2. Select Online and reboot to check if the image can be uploaded to Steam.
Fix 4 : Clear download cache of Steam client
1. Open the Settings menu from the Steam menu once you launch the Steam application.
2. In the settings window, select Downloads in the left pane .
3. In the right pane, click the Clear Download Cache button and then click Confirm to clear the cache.
4. Restart Steam to check if the issue is resolved.
Fix 5 : Enable/Disable VPN and Proxy
1. Quit the Steam client. Use Task Manager to ensure that no Steam-related process is running on your system.
2. Just press Windows Key+R to open Run . Open Proxy Settings by typing ms-settings:network-proxy in the Run dialog .
3. In Proxy turn off : Auto detect settings, Use setup script and Use proxy server.
4. Restart Steam and check if the problem uploading images is resolved.
5. If the problem persists, try a different network and see if it gets resolved.
Fix 6 : Disable firewall and antivirus
Antivirus and firewalls interfere with programs and prevent them from working properly.
Disable antivirus
1. Type windows security in the search box and select the top result.
2. After opening Windows Security , click on Virus & Threat Protection option .
3. In the Virus & threat protection settings section, select Manage settings .
4. Disable the Real-time protection toggle .
Disable firewall
1. Type windows security in the search box and select the top result.
2. Click Firewall and Network Protection in the left pane .
3. Check disabling Windows Defender Firewall (not recommended) for both private and public networks.
Although disabling firewall and antivirus is not recommended, check if it works for you while uploading the image.
Fix 7 : Disable compact friends list and chat view
A compact friends list and the chat view feature make chatting in Steam easier. However, users have reported that this feature can interfere with image uploading. This feature is disabled by default, but if you have it enabled on your Steam account, try disabling it.
1. Click on the Friends & Chat option at the bottom right of the Steam window .
2. In the chat window, click the Settings icon at the top right .
3. In the left pane, select Size and Scale .
4. Disablethe Compact friends list and chat view option .
5. Close and restart Steam to check if the problem persists.
Fix 8 : Disable family view of steam client
Steam allows family members to share games while their games are disconnected, which can cause issues when uploading images to Steam servers.
1. In the Steam app, click Settings from the Steam drop -down menu .
2. In the left pane of the Settings window, select Family . In the right pane , select Manage Family View and turn off Family View.
3. Restart the Steam app and check if the issue is resolved.
4. Otherwise, check the "Friends, Chat & Groups" and "My Online Profile, Screenshots & Achievements" options to see if that solves the problem.
Fix 9 : Join the Steam Beta program
Steam continuously releases new updates to the client to add new features and fix the reported bugs. If the issue persists even with the latest version of the client, participating in the beta program may fix the bugs and resolve the issue.
1. After launching the Steam app, click Settings on the Steam menu .
2. Click Account in the left pane . In the left pane, under Beta Participation , click Change .
3. Expand the Beta Participation drop-down menu and select Steam Beta Update .
4. Apply the changes and click Restart Now .
5. Check if the image can be uploaded after Steam relaunch.
Fix 10 : Run Steam as administrator
1. Quit Steam and stop all Steam related processes running on your system from Task Manager.
2. Search for Steam in the search box on the taskbar .
3. Right-click Steam and select Run as administrator .
4. Steam will now open with administrator privileges. Open the chat and try to upload the picture.
Fix 11 : image file rename and scale
Sometimes the size of the image file or the image name with an unsupported character can cause this image upload issue.
1. Open the folder where the image is located and rename the file . Check if you can upload the image to Steam server. If it doesn't work, try putting the image in a different directory and see if the upload works.
2. If the error persists after renaming, open an image editing software such as Paint and try to reduce the file size by resizing the image as needed. After resizing the image, check if Steam throws the image upload error.
Fix 12 : Use a browser to upload images
If after renaming and reschanging the image, the problem persists. Then try to upload the image using the web browser client .
1. Launch the browser and visit Steam Web.
2. Enter your credentials and try to upload the image to Steam server .
3. If that fails , refresh the web page (F5 key) and try again. If it doesn't work, try a different browser (Edge or IE).
4. If all the fixes fail, try reinstalling the Steam client to solve the upload problem. Back up the essentials beforehand and remove all traces of the previous installation.
