Windows 10 folders and files access denied error

Can't access any files or folders on your computer? Don't worry, just follow these fixes and the issue will be resolved very soon. This problem usually occurs due to permissions or ownership issues of the specific file/folder. Changing the permissions or taking ownership of the file/folder will help you solve this problem.

Fix-1 Make sure the folder is not encrypted-

Check if the data in the folder is encrypted.

1. Right-click the problematic file/folder and then click " Properties " to open its properties.

2. In the  Properties window, go to the " General " tab .

3. Now click on " Advanced " at the bottom of the window.

4. In the Extended Attributes window , make sure the last option " Encrypt content to back up data " is unchecked on your computer .

5. Click " OK " to save the changes.

6. Finally, in the Properties window, click Apply " and " OK " to save the changes to your computer.

Try accessing the file again. If the problem occurs, go to the next fix.

Fix-2 Take ownership of file-

Taking ownership of the file will surely help you solve this problem.

1. In File Explorer , go to the file location.

2. Then right click on this file and then click on " Properties ".

3. In the Properties window, go to the " Security " tab and then click on the " Advanced " settings to access it.

4. In the Advanced Security Settings window , click Change next to Owner :.

5. In the Select Users or Groups window, click on the Advanced option .

6. Click the Find Now tab and look for your admin account in the list of groups and users.

7. Select your account name from the Users and Accounts list, then click OK .

8. You will see the selected account name in the " Enter the object name to select: " field.

9. If you are sure, click " OK " to save the changes to your computer.

9. In the Advanced Sharing Settings window, check the Replace owner for subcontainers and objects option

10. Also check the option " Replace all child object permission entries with inheritable permission entries from this object " at the bottom of the window.

11. Finally, click " Apply " and " OK " to save the changes to your computer.

Now you (the account you selected) have full control over the file/folder. You can easily change the folder.

Fix-3 Give your account full control over files-

Adjusting the folder's permission gives you full control over the problematic folder.

1. First , right-click the file and then click " Properties ".

2. In the image properties window, go to the " Security " tab .

3. Then click " Edit " to edit your computer's properties.

4. Now from the list select a username from the " Groups or usernames: " list.

5. Check the " Allow " option in " Full Control ".

6. Finally, click " Apply " and " OK " to take full control of your account.

After that, try to access the folder.

Fix-4 Check if your account is an administrator account-

You may not be able to change some of the files/folders if you are not using an administrator account.

1. Right- click the Start button in the lower-left corner of your desktop, and then click Computer Management >.

2. In the Computer Management window , on the left , expand Local Users and Groups .

3. Click " User " to select it.

4. Now on the right side of the same window , right- click on the username and then click on " Properties ".

5. In the Properties window, switch to the Member Of tab , and then check whether the account is Administrators or not.

a. If you notice that Administrators already exists, you can skip this fix.

b. If you see a blank space on the Member Of tab , follow these steps:

6. Click Add .

7. In the Select Groups window, type " Administrators " in the " Enter the object names to select: " field.

8. Click Check Names to check the names. Finally, click " OK " to save the changes.

9. You will see " Administrators " on the Member Of tab .

10. Finally, click " Apply " and then click " OK " to save the changes.

Then close the Computer Management window You should be able to access the problematic file/folder on your computer.

Tips -

1. If you are still denied access to the file or folder, change the ownership/permissions of the drive (like- Local Disk (C:) or D: drive ) contains it.

2. Try opening this file/folder with a different administrator account.
