4 Ways to End Any Task on Windows 11 PC

Whenever you use many applications and many processes of each application are running at the same time, eventually the system will hang or slow down the system performance and suddenly you will get the application is not responding error. This means that the currently running application has been hung and you cannot close it either. Then the role of task manager comes into play, which can kill the program for you. However, there are many ways to close an application and in this article, we are going to show you how to close any application with End Task on Windows 11 system.

Method 1: Using Task Manager

Step 1 : Open Task Manager

Press CTRL + SHIFT + ESC on your keyboard at the same time.

Right-click the Windows Start button and select Task Manager from the list.

Step 2 : In the Task Manager window

On the Processes tab , you can see that there are many applications listed under the currently running apps.

To close an application, select the application and right-click on it (ex:-calculator-app)

Then click End Task in the context menu .

This will successfully close the application if it was not responding.

Method 2: Via the keyboard shortcut

To close the application in case the task manager is not responding/working, there is a keyboard shortcut.

First, select the application by clicking on the application window and pressing ALT + F4 at the same time until the application closes.

This is the first and easiest method to end any task that is not responding.

Method 3: End task using Command Prompt

Step 1 : Open Command Prompt application as Administrator

Press the Win key on your keyboard and type cmd .

Then right-click on the Command Prompt application and select Run as administrator .

Step 2 : In the command prompt tool

To view all running applications, run the following command.

Type to- do list and press Enter .

Step 3 : "End task" command

To close an application, here we use the TASKKILL command.

For example, let's try to close the Calculator application (PID = 23316 ).

Type TASKKILL/PID 23316/F

If you need to close many applications, type TASKKILL /PID 23316 1048 1592 1040 /F

where 1048, 1592, 1040  are the PID of other applications and /F is to force the application.

Finally, press Enter .

Note:- You need to look for PID in command prompt for each application every time you try to run the above command because the PID will change when you try to restart it.

This will close all applications whose PIDs are mentioned in the TASKKILL command.

Method 4: Quit any application using the desktop shortcut

Step 1 : Go to the desktop by pressing Win + D keys at the same time .

Then right-click on the desktop screen and select New > Shortcut .

Step 2 : In the field Enter the location of the item

Copy and paste the following path as given below.

taskkill /f/fi "status eq not responding"

Then click Next to continue.

Step 3 : Enter the appropriate name for the shortcut (e.g. TaskKill shortcut)

Then click Finish to create a shortcut on the desktop.

To kill all unresponsive applications, just double-click this shortcut.

That's all guys!
