If you recently upgraded your operating system to Windows 10, you may encounter the You do not have permission to open this file error. Contact the file owner or an administrator to get permission when accessing a file or folder. This message means you cannot access/delete/rename files or folders.
So what? could be the reason for this error? It could either be that a user or group was accidentally deleted from the group or user names list, a certain "deny" function was accidentally added to the group or user, or it could be because there are differences between the NTFS and share permissions. But the good news is it can be fixed. Let's see how.
Solution: Via File Explorer
Step 1: Press Windows key + E simultaneously on your keyboard to open File Explorer . Now click the This PC shortcut on the left and select the C (OS (C:)) drive on the right .
Step 2: Here we want to open the Recovery folder on C drive , but access to the folder is denied. For you it can be any other folder.
Step 3: To change the permissions, right-click on the folder you want to open (in our case it's the Recovery folder ) and select Properties from the context menu.
Step 4: In the Recovery Properties dialog box, click the Security tab and then click the Advanced button.
Step 5: In the Advanced recovery security settings window, click the Change link next to Cannot view current owner .
Step 6: In the Select User or Group dialog box , click the Advanced button .
Step 7: On the next window, click Find Now button . Now search for your user account in the Search results box , select it and click on the OK button to save the changes.
Step 8: Next, press OK again to save changes and continue.
Step 9: You are now back in Advanced Security Settings for Recovery . You can see the owner 's name as your user account name . Click Apply and OK .
That's it. You changed the owner permissions and now you can open the file easily and without any error message.
