When you want to copy or delete a file or folder, you may suddenly encounter an error saying " The source filenames are larger than supported by the file system". Try going to a location with a shorter path name, or try renaming it to shorter names before attempting this operation ".
You may be wondering why you are seeing the Error. The reason is that a given file or folder is deep in a series of long-named subfolders and Microsoft doesn't allow more than 255 characters for the subfolders. That's why it prevents you from moving, deleting or even renaming the file. The worst thing is that you cannot do anything with the file/folder and it continues to take up your system memory.
Fortunately, however, this error can be fixed. Let's see how.
Solution 1: By renaming the contained folder
Step 1: For example, if you want to rename a video file in E drive , you may not be able to rename it. If you right-click on it, you will not get the option to rename the file.
Step 2: The reason why the file cannot be renamed is because the file is located deep in the drive and hence the file path is too long and exceeds the Microsoft requirement of 255 characters.
Step 3: It is best to shorten the folder name now, since we cannot rename the file. Here we shortened the folder name to LS where the file is located. You can change the name according to your needs.
Step 4: Now when you go back to the file and right-click on it, Rename and the other options appear in the context menu. Click the Rename option to rename the file.
That's it. Now you can easily copy, move, delete or rename a file or folder.
Solution 2: Press Shift + Del to delete
If you cannot delete, use this method.
If you right click and then delete, try this. Just press Shift + Del to delete the file so it doesn't go to the Trash and get deleted straight away.
Solution 3: Use WinRar software
1. Open WinRar if you have winrar installed on your PC
2. Now navigate to the specific file or folder that this error occurs with.
3. Now select this file and click Add .
4. Now on the next screen select Delete files after archiving .
5. Click OK .
6. Now delete this archived file as well if you want to delete this file sooner.
If you want to move the file, copy the file, paste it somewhere else and extract it there.
